This position will be based in Lausanne, Switzerland reporting to the Managing Director of Keurig Trading.

 

DESCRIPTION

The Quality Manager oversees the sensory and analytical quality evaluation of green coffee associated with Keurig Trading’s purchasing functions and implements quality systems best practices. This position is responsible to develop and implement new sensory programs that ensure quality standards are met and evaluation methodologies are aligned with Keurig Trading Company’s customers. This role leads the team responsible for raw materials evaluation activities, maintenance of sensory profiles, maintenance of source quality audits, source nonconformance, food safety and regulatory testing records, and supports purchasing activities to optimize the allocation of green coffee. This manager communicates expectations to suppliers and reports on supplier performance as well as supports other sensory related functions such as recipe development, product-line maintenance and new product development.
This Manager works directly with US based KDP Sensory and Supplier Quality teams to align on Sensory Lab Center of Excellence and Ingredient food safety, regulatory, supplier approval and auditing linked programs.

 

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Oversee the receipt, preparation, evaluation, documentation, reporting and training functions required to ensure green coffee quality performance to standard.
  • Lead, train and develop Coffee Specialists and Lab Technicians. Participate in general sensory activities.
    • Build and lead a green coffee source food safety and regulatory testing monitoring program
    • Build and lead a green coffee source food safety and GMP auditing program
    • Manage on going supplier non-conformance incidents through the application of CAPA (corrective and preventative action) requirements.
    • Work with industry associations to keep abreast of emerging regulatory and food safety issues for coffee
  • Analyze green coffee sensory performance to standard and regular reporting of performance to coffee buyers and suppliers.
  • Ensure coffee evaluation team is calibrated and aligned with customers.
  • Develop, oversee, and maintain calibration protocols and training activities for the Keurig Trading cupping panel.
  • Ensure regular and frequent communication with customers.
  • Document and communicate quality standards and attributes for all green coffee part numbers to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Evaluate green coffee samples, including physical evaluation of green coffee, sample roasting, dosing, grinding, cupping and brewing.
  • Oversee the maintenance of a “World Class” green coffee evaluation lab based on Six Sigma and work with Coffee Procurement team to help train and calibrate suppliers to Keurig Trading cupping methodologies, protocols and desired sensory attributes.

Requirements

WHAT YOU MUST HAVE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field required (Sensory or Food Science, Quality or R&D preferred).
  • 5-10 years of coffee quality and manufacturing experience with conceptual understanding of statistical analyses including significance testing, risk profiles, and multivariate techniques.
  • Experience in large scale beverage/food processing industry preferred.
  • Proven leadership and people managerial skills, which includes mentoring, team building, and motivating a team toward a common goal.
  • Expertise in sensory science (i.e. applied psychophysical techniques, descriptive analysis) and consumer science including qualitative and quantitative approaches.
  • Demonstrate coffee sensory skills and/or “Q” Grading proficiency and knowledge of standard cupping methodology is preferred.
  • Background in ingredient supplier quality, regulatory and food safety management
  • Ability to lead and facilitate quality audits and supplier incident management
  • Expertise in designing and implementing a risk-based ingredient sample testing program to ensure food safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Fluency in English language required, proficiency in Spanish and French preferred.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems and apply analytical skills to create continuous process improvement.
  • Able to conduct effective tastings, technical meetings, demonstrations and presentations of products, processes and competitive advantage as necessary.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively while managing resources to ensure positive outcomes.
  • Demonstrate knowledge in performance assessment and ability to provide learning solutions that meet strategic business objectives.
  • Ability to carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s operating principles, policies and procedures and applicable laws.
  • Demonstrate desire to improve safety, quality and environmental performance and spread enthusiasm for these programs within the coffee processing area.
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written and ability to serve as an ambassador to internal and external
  • Ability to effectively communicate cross-culturally during calibration sessions at home and abroad.
  • Ability to travel internationally for up to 10 days under rustic conditions with some flexibility in scheduling is desired
